Am I right in saying that if one is abroad the card can still be topped up using the smartphone app?

Yes you can top-up from anywhere in the world using one of your debit/credit cards or by bank transfer from your own account.
Do I have to go through the “verification” process every time?
No, you only need to verified the card once.
So I can do that before I travel abroad then?
